Questions and abstract
In this activity the teacher gave us some questions to create the abstract of our project. We were guided by answering these questions in order to formulate the best presentation of the abstract including all the specific points.
Developing Speaking Skills Through Educational Games
Abstract
This study aims to develop speaking skills through educational games in elementary school at Colegio Mundial de Puebla AC. When the school year started, the students could say greetings and short commands. The problem was identified over the course of the school year, when students demonstrated a lack of vocabulary, an inability to hold a basic spoken conversation, speaking anxiety, and a lack of motivation. They used to talk by repetition or memorizing, but without understanding.
In this problematic situation, I used a sample of second- and fifth-grade students from an elementary school at Colegio Mundial de Puebla AC. We applied a WACCA scale to measure anxiety in communication or classroom contexts, especially in language learning, a survey about what motivates a student as a favorite activity. That guided us to work with educational games. Then we implement a sequence of interactive games and playful games.
In our research, we found that the language game has been implemented in other countries with great success.
Students who participate in game-based speaking activities show significantly higher oral proficiency scores than those who receive traditional instruction.
Empirical evidence demonstrates that game-based interventions reduce speaking anxiety, increase learner participation, and produce statistically significant improvements in oral performance across vocabulary, fluency, accuracy, interaction, and coherence.
Educational games create a learner-centered environment where students actively participate in communication. They are not merely for entertainment, but structured activities with rules, objectives, and meaningful interaction. Through games, learners are exposed to real communicative situations that require them to use language spontaneously.
At the end I wrote the abstract and each student shared it by WhatsApp, that gave us the opportunity to know how they identify important things for their research. In my opinion, this abstract shows that educational games are an effective strategy to improve speaking skills in elementary school students. I think the study is important because it focuses not only on language learning, but also on students’ emotions, such as speaking anxiety and lack of confidence. I agree that many students memorize vocabulary without really understanding how to communicate, especially in EFL classrooms, for that reason in this abstract I open the door to continue working in something that will help those students who will improve their speaking skill while they play.
